Building Fire in Paradise Twp. At the Red Caboose

Strasburg Station 5-10 along with Bart 5-1, Paradise 4-7, Ronks 4-8 were dispatched for a working caboose fire in the 300 block of Paradise Lane.

The Engine 5-10-2 crew was unsure if the caboose was occupied when later confirmed that it was vacant. Engine 5-10-2 arrived to find a working fire in the kitchen area which was quickly knocked down with a 1 3/4 handline. Engine 5-10-2 remained on scene for a few hours to handle overhaul and assist with lighting for the fire marshal. It appears that an electric stove top burner was accidentally left on and ignited materials that were in close proximity to the burner and extended up the wall and caused a minor collapse of the kitchen cabinetry.

Thanks to all who assisted us.

Of special note, Firefighter Bieber, who worked the first in nozzle on this job, got his first interior fire since turning 18.
Job well done Bieb….

New Breathing Air Compressor Placed in Service

On Monday, July 07, 2008 Airpower International of Pennsauken, New Jersey delivered and installed our new MAKO 6000 psi 4 stage Breathing Air Compressor.

The compressor was purchased through the 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The grant covered 95% of the cost and we picked up the 5% balance.

The compressor will allow us to refill our cascade system on our engine in house. We currently must travel to a neighboring fire house to refill our breathing air.

This is main portion of the 2007 grant. The remainder will go towards the purchase and installation of a gear washer.

ISO Drill Planned for Strasburg Township

Plans are coming together for an ISO water flow drill for Strasburg Township on July 19, 2008.

The drill will simulate our ability to supply the needed fire flow for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

We will be conducting the drill at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center along with many of our mutual aid stations that would be responding to the museum if there were an actual fire.

The result of this drill will be two fold. Not only will we ensure our ability to provided the proper volume of water but we are working toward improving our ISO rating for the Borough (6) and the Township (9). The improved rating will make a direct financial impact on the residents and businesses that reside in the Borough and Township by lowering their fire insurance rates.

More details will follow and requests for assistance of our mutual aid departments will be going out shortly.

Busy Day for the 5-10 Crew

Calls for station 5-10 kicked off at 02:05 when alarm bells sounded at the Borough Municipal building. Chief 5-10 arrived to find 21-6 on thscene confirming a false alarm. Chief Wentz recalled the station.

The Tanker went to West Willow for a reported building fire at 14:35 hours. The fire ended up being a false call when it was found to be a wood stove at the facility.

Then in the early evening hours a storm rolled into the County and the 5-10 house handeled 5 additional calls for trees down, wires calls and a building that collapsed.

Rack up 7 more calls for the year.
